(NT2 is the abbreviation of ‘NTT’: Nederlands als Tweede Taal = Dutch as Second Language).

If you want to settle down in The Netherlands on a permanent basis, there are 5 different exams which could be applicable to your situation, and for all these exams we do have full training courses.

  1. Basic Civic Integration Exam Abroad (‘Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland’), which is a very basic language test, plus a simple knowledge test regarding Dutch society. Target: only for the purpose of getting a ‘MVV’, which is basically just an entry ticket to The Netherlands. Once you have arrived, you will receive the real visa for 5 years, called ‘VVR’ (‘Verblijfs Vergunning Regulier’ = Regular Residence Permit). Required NT2 proficiency level A1. Only for foreign partners of Dutch nationals.
  2. Naturalisation Exam (‘Naturalisatie-examen’, target: obtaining a Dutch passport / Dutch citizenship). Required NT2 proficiency level A2. Main requirement: candidate must be married with a Dutch national for at least 3 years. Second requirement: candidate must be a foreigner, living in Singapore. (Singaporeans cannot take the Naturalisation Exam in Singapore, but only in another country.)
  3. Civic Integration Exam (‘Inburgeringsexamen’, target: getting a Permanent Resident status). Required NT2 proficiency level B1. Requirement: this exam can only be taken in The Netherlands, but you can fully prepare yourself for this exam with us.
  4. NT2 State Exam I (NT2 Staatsexamen I.) Your target could be: preparing yourself for a polytechnic diploma in The Netherlands (called ‘HBO’: Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs). Your target could also be: achieving NT2 proficiency level B1 as replacement of the language part of the mayor ‘Inburgeringsexamen’: reading, writing, listening, speaking at NT2-B1 level. Requirement: this exam can only be taken in The Netherlands, but you can fully prepare yourself for this exam with us.
  5. NT2 State Exam II (NT2 Staatsexamen II, your target could be: to be able to register as a foreign student at any Dutch university in case the curriculum is only or partly provided in Dutch. Your target could also be: obtaining a managerial role in The Netherlands. For both targets, you need to be able to read, write, listen and speak Dutch at NT2 level B2. Requirement: this exam can only be taken in The Netherlands, but you can fully prepare yourself for this exam with us.

If you need to start from scratch, you can sign up for our NT2 Beginners Course.

After 3 months, you will have reached Dutch language proficiency level NT2-A1. This NT2 level is required in order to pass the Basic Civic Integration Exam Abroad in Singapore (for getting a MVV).

At that moment, you will have increased your Dutch vocabulary to approx. 1,200 most commonly used words. Plus, thanks to our smart sentence building diagram you will get familiar with, you will be able to form your very own Dutch sentences in a 100% correct following order of words, which is the necessary first step towards being able to successfully converse in Dutch.

Please note that next to our Beginners classes, we also provide some hands-on training sessions with real past exams, to help you to prepare yourself thoroughly for your Basic Civic Integration Exam Abroad (=Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland) in order to get an MVV, if that is your aim.

All of our past MVV course participants, who have combined our Beginners Course with these additional preparatory MVV sessions, have passed their Basic Civic Integration Exam Abroad at the Dutch Embassy in Singapore with very high marks (even with full marks for some) thanks to lots of confidence.

For those, who would like to continue with the next round of our Beginners Course (in order to reach NT2 level A2), it is possible to sign up for another round of classes with a duration of 3 months, right after the elementary A1-course.

Once you have reached NT2 level A2, and your aim is to take your ‘Inburgering’-exam, you still need to study and practise more if you want to get a permanent residence status in The Netherlands, since the Dutch government has increased the required proficiency level for this mayor exam from the previous NT2 level A2 to the current level B1, which is intermediate level.

The reason for this, is that the prospects of obtaining a job in The Netherlands are considerably more favourable for newcomers with a proper command of Dutch.

Passing your ‘Inburgeringsexamen’ is required to be able to permanently stay in The Netherlands. This exam can only be be taken in The Netherlands, but you can fully prepare yourself with us in Singapore if you still have time to do so.

However, there are another options instead of taking the Inburgering-exam. If you are a foreigner (non-Singaporean), residing in Singapore, and you have been married to a Dutch national for at least 3 years, you can take the Dutch Naturalisation exam instead of the Inburgering-exam.

By choosing this path to integration, you will obtain Dutch citizenship and you will therefore receive a Dutch passport, but it also means that you will need to give up your current nationality.

The advantage of taking the Naturalisation-exam is that the Dutch language proficiency level for this exam is still at NT2-A2 at this moment, so this exam is much easier compared to the Inburgering-exam (NT2-B1).

However, since you will need to give up your current nationality, this may come with certain undesirable consequences, such as losing access to certain social services, losing your right to own a property there, or not being allowed to work there anymore.

It all depends on the specific regulations in your country of origin regarding renouncing your citizenship.

For those, who are interested in preparing themselves thoroughly for the (major) Inburgering-exam (for Dutch Permanent Resident status or Naturalisation, we provide additional (hands-on) preparatory training courses with regard to reading, writing, listening and speaking, plus KNM training (called Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij, meaning Knowledge of Dutch Society) plus ONA training (called Orientatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt, meaning Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market).
